Cashmere X-stitch poncho

I have a lovely, sweet customer that was looking for a fall poncho that would be comfortable, soft and have a really open, lacy stitch pattern. I showed her my version of the Martha Stewart poncho in crochet, but as you may know, I never make the same design twice. Each piece is one of a kind. So, taking her suggestions, I went to work and let the wheels turn. I remembered a stitch I read about in a lace border pattern from "Knitting On the Edge", by Nicky Epstien.

 I was at a LYS called My Craft Room, and they had a hearty selection of Cherry Tree Hill Yarns. I fell in love with the "birches" colorway and bought whatever they had available in it that day. I bought these two ribbon yarns (Sachet and Cashcott) that day, convinced that I would make a shawl out of one and fringe it with the other. And it sat and sat and sat in my stash and nothing came of it. Well, I've been wanting to design a summer top with an off the shoulder neckline for some time now...Then it hit me.

Faroese-Shaped Triangular Lace Shawl

This was a little more challenging than the first lace shawl I designed. I was a little intimidated by the yarn: Lorna's Laces Helen's Lace yarn. It was a touch thicker than thread. It felt so delicate in my fingers, that I was afraid I was going to break it. But, then I did my test swatch and OMG! After washing and blocking, the fiber came alive! The yarn bloomed and softened up so much - I caught myself petting the swatch all day. Then, I was extremely anxious to start the actual shawl.
